We are pleased to announce the University of Vienna as the venue for the 5th biannual conference of the European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology. The University of Vienna was established in 1365 CE by Rudolf IV. of Habsburg. It remains Austria’s most prominentuniversity to this day. The THE-ranking places the university among the top 100 worldwide and considers it as one of the most international universities.

The Department of Art History at the University of Vienna is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in Europe. It pioneered the expansion of art historical research into fields beyond Europe and included in its curricula the first courses on the arts of Asia already in the beginning of the 20th century. Today offerings cover, next to many aspects of European art history, the fields of Islamic and Asian art history.

Interest in the arts of Asia grew in Vienna over many centuries, with Habsburg Wunderkammern and Rokoko palaces boasting Indian chintz textiles, Chinese porcelain, and Japanese lacquer screens. The study of Art and Archaeology of Asia in Vienna drew much inspiration from the 1873 World’s Fair in the Prater. The fair featured impressive shows in the Persian and Turkish pavilions and staged the first significant exhibitions of Japanese and Chinese art in Europe. The event stirred public interest in Asian cultures, led to the founding of the Oriental Museum, which was the first of its kind in Europe, initiated collecting activities, and left its mark on the art movements Secession and Wiener Werkstätte. Today, research profits from extensive holdings of Asian material culture in institutions such as the Museum of Applied Arts, the Weltmuseum and Schönbrunn Palace. The organizing team for this conference consists of staff members of the Chair of Asian Art History at the Department of Art History. The conference venue will be the Campus of the University of Vienna, situated along rows of tree-lined and car- free courtyards within easy walking distance of the city center.

Please save the date! The call for papers will follow in June. We look forward to welcoming you to Vienna in 2027.
