We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the 5th EAAA Conference. The conference will be held at the University of Vienna from 29th August to 2ndSeptember 2027. It is jointly organized by the European Association for Asian Art and Archaeology (EAAA) and the Department of Art History at the University of Vienna.
Main aims of the 5th EAAA Conference:
- To open a dialogue between scholars of Asian art and archaeology and to offer a platform for the presentation and discussion of recent research.
- To highlight the significance of global research on Asian art and archaeology.
- To provide a stage for research on the many collections of Asian art in Europe.
- To reflect on the historical approach that has been prevalent in the field and to critically engage with existing art theories and methodologies.
- To formulate new research vistas, approaches and methods in Asian art and archaeology.
Scholars from Europe and beyond are invited to submit proposals dealing with the art and archaeology of any region of Asia from the Asian Pacific to the eastern Mediterranean as well as transregional research. The proposals may also focus on museum studies, methodology, critical theory or performing arts regarding the above-mentioned areas. We encourage advanced doctoral candidates and early career researchers to submit proposals.
The language of the conference is English. The conference will be held in person. All speakers are expected to present on site.
The EAAA board accepts the following formats of submissions:
- Individual paper proposals
- Panel proposals
- Proposals for presentations in alternative formats
Each individual presentation should last 20 minutes, allocating additional 10 minutes at the end for questions and discussions.
While individual paper proposals are welcome, we strongly advise participants to arrange their contributions in panels before submission. Otherwise, the section committee will group individual papers into panels on a unifying theme. The selection committee reserves the right to modify the structure of proposed panels.

- Submit your proposal in WORD format (not PDF).

- The call for papers will close on 15th September 2026.
Each individual proposal must include the following subitems (in this order):
- Title
- Abstract (max. 250 words)
- 3-4 keywords (period, geographic region, general subject and topic)
- Name of the speaker
- CV (max. 100 words), as well as professional status and affiliation (e.g. PhD candidate, University of Leeds)
- Contact information (telephone number, e-mail address)
Each panel proposal must include the following subitems (in this order):
- Panel title and abstract (max. 250 words)
- Names and affiliation of the panel organizer/s, chair, and optionally a discussant
- 3-4 individual contributions (according to the format for individual proposals mentioned above)
Each proposal for presentations in alternative formats must include:
- Panel title and abstract, including a description and explanation of the chosen format
- Names and affiliation of the organizer/s, chair, and persons involved (if applicable)
- Individual contributions (according to the format for individual proposals mentioned above)
Please also note the following participation role limitations:
- Panel organisers can serve as chair/discussants or as panellists in their panel.
- Panellists are discouraged from serving as chair/discussants in the same panel in which they are speaking.
- Panellists may participate in a panel as chair/discussant in which they are not speaking.
- Each applicant can submit only one proposal.
All submitted proposals will be anonymised and reviewed by the selection committee. The notification of acceptance will be made by 31st January 2027. The registration period is from 1st February to 31st April 2027. The final conference programme will be published by 31st May 2027.
Conference registration fees:
The conference registration fee covers coffee breaks and the welcome reception.
Regular EAAA members 110.- €
Students and retired EAAA members 60.- €
EAAA membership:
