The Annual Conference on Asian Studies is organized by the Department of Asian Studies at Palacký University Olomouc. The first conference of the series took place in 2006. The conference was originally called Annual Conference on Cultural and Social Anthropology of East Asia, but it changed its name in 2016.

The Department of Asian Studies at Palacký University Olomouc is currently accepting individual paper, organized panel, and research poster proposals for its 15th Annual Conference on Asian Studies (ACAS) to be held on November 26–27, 2021 in Olomouc, Czech Republic and online, using Whova, a conference (web)app.

The general theme of the conference this year is Continuity and Change. We invite contributions that concern any region or culture in Asia and address the conference theme from a variety of perspectives. We welcome both synchronic and diachronic approaches grounded in a range of disciplines, including anthropology, arts, cultural geography, history, international relations, linguistics, literature, philosophy, political science, religion studies, sociology, and other fields.

We look forward to contributions dealing with topics such as continuity and discontinuity in cultural, social, political, or linguistic systems, the agents, drivers, and catalysts of change, the motivations for and power to change or control of change, the attitudes and reactions to change, and more. In addition, we are also interested in proposals that focus on the impact of COVID-19 and the global pandemic on different aspects of public and private lives of citizens in Asia as well as on Asian studies around the globe.

We invite researchers, teachers, and postgraduate students to submit their proposals for individual oral presentations as well as organized panels comprising of three to four oral presentations dealing with a selected theme. We also invite students to submit their proposals for our Student Poster Session where they can showcase the results of their research.

The language of the conference is English. The proposals should be submitted in the form of abstracts by June 30, 2021 to our EasyChair submission page (you will need to create an account at the EasyChair website to be able to make a submission). Abstracts for individual oral presentations or student posters should be up to 300 words long (excluding references from the word count). Abstracts for organized panels should include not only the title of the panel but also the titles of the papers that it consists of and altogether should be up to 1,000 words long (excluding references from the word count). Decisions on the abstracts will be sent by September 12, 2021.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the conference will take form of an online or hybrid event. The final decision about the format will be made closer to the conference date in the autumn of 2021. The conference fee for presenters who decide to come to Olomouc for the conference (including those that are part of organized panels) is 75 EUR / 2,000 CZK. The conference fee for online presenters is 10 EUR / 250 CZK. The fee will have to be paid by the end of October 2021. Participation in the Student Poster Session and participation of those affiliated with Palacký University Olomouc is free of charge.

We do not require full papers to be submitted to us at any time prior to the conference. After the conference, participants will have an option to submit their paper for consideration to be included in our open access (print on demand) edited volume.
