The new publication Emissary from the Far East: Vojtěch Chytil and the Collecting of Modern Chinese Painting in Interwar Czechoslovakia by Michaela Pejčochová relates the exciting life story of the Czech painter and collector Vojtěch Chytil (1896–1936). During his sojourns in China, Chytil taught Western painting and collected Chinese art. In a visionary way, he appreciated the qualities of modern Chinese ink painting and amassed a highly appraised collection, which he brought to Europe. The unique graphic design of the book published by the National Gallery Prague includes elements of original Chinese textile design and bookbinding.
