The Royal Museum of Mariemont invites you to a journey through China’s recent history. Come and discover the women who made their mark in their time: empresses, revolutionaries or mothers. Whether they were real or imaginary figures, they have lived through the tormented period of the 20th century.
The exhibition offers a renewed portrait of the modern woman, free from the projections and fantasies of the past century. China in the feminine questions the cultural, social or political forces that conditioned their existence: what were the rules, duties and expectations that determine this feminine life?
In a journey from the private to the public sphere, life stories and photographs stand alongside personal presentations and jewellery, theatre puppets and propaganda posters. A century of change, illustrated for an intimate look! An unprecedented face-to-face meeting in which personal stories and the history of an entire country are exposed.
