Southwestern University, a national liberal arts college in the Austin metro area, invites applications for a three-year benefits-eligible position as a Visiting Assistant Professor in East Asian history. The second and third years of the appointment are contingent on satisfactory performance. The position requires teaching one World History course (with significant pre- or early modern coverage) and a combination of regional surveys and thematic seminars drawn from the candidate’s areas of expertise, in a 3-3 load. The successful candidate will offer exciting, engaging courses that are attractive to a wide range of students and accessible to first-years. The History Department’s four current members participate in several interdisciplinary programs (including Environmental Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, Feminist Studies, International Studies, and Latin American and Border Studies). We look for similar breadth in our candidates for visiting positions.
Qualifications preferred include Ph.D. completed by the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience is desirable. Candidates who have a strong commitment to inclusive pedagogy and enhancing diversity in academia are also preferred.
